INDIAN WELLS, Calif.—Rafael Nadal says he has made a good start to his season as he returns from three months off with wrist problems. The former world No. 1 has gone deep at all his events this season, but has yet to win a title—he lost in the final at the Australian Open and in Acapulco, and in the quarters in Brisbane.

But the Spaniard says that he has played well.

“[I’ve been] satisfied from the beginning of the season, since the first match of the year in Abu Dhabi,” he told reporters after his opening-round win over Guido Pella in Indian Wells. "...I didn't play [not] one very bad match during the whole season. In Melbourne, I played some great matches. In Acapulco, I played well. In Brisbane, I played well. Let's see here.

"But during the four events that I played, I played at [a] very high level. Very happy the way I started the season. Now here is another opportunity.”

Nadal will face Fernando Verdasco next, and is in the same quarter as Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.
