Rafael Nadal assures fans that coach Toni Nadal will not be leaving

Rafael Nadal has announced that he is adding a new coach, but will still be working with his uncle, Toni.

"Carlos Moya will join my team immediately and work together with Toni [Nadal] and Francis Roig," said Nadal, quoted in a statement.

"To have someone like Carlos who is not only a friend, but also a very important person in my career is something special. He will be next to me [during] practice and competition. At the same time, he will also join the Rafa Nadal Academy, working with Toni and the rest of the technical team."

The Spaniard had been resisting calls to bring in a new coach following a couple of years of subpar performances, but former No. 1 Moya is a familiar figure. The two are fellow Mallorcans, and have known each other since Nadal was a child. Moya was coaching Milos Raonic this season, but the two recently announced that they would stop working together.

The move appears to have been a joint decision by the Nadal team, with the coaching offer made to Moya by Toni.

"Toni Nadal called me while I was at the IPTL competition," said Moya. "To be honest, it was great to receive that call. To be able to help Rafa is something special for me and I am sure that together with Toni, Francis, and the rest of the team, we have a great common project.

"Rafa is a special player and above all a great person and friend on which I have a lot of trust and confidence. At the same time, the Rafa Nadal Academy is an important challenge in an already very professional structure with great professionals that already do excellent work."

Nadal stopped his season following the Shanghai Masters, saying he wanted extra time to train and recover from a wrist injury during the clay court season. However, he has been back on court playing doubles in the Spanish national championships this week with Marc Lopez, insisting that he is not in shape for more rigorous competition.

"To play doubles, I am feeling good now, but not singles. It would be a lot," he told local media. "I am training three and a half hours each day."

The pair is in the final. They are an unusually accomplished team to be participating in the Spanish nationals, but the event is being played at the Nadal academy.
