British 16-year-old Laura Robson has won her first match at the WTA level, albeit through retirement. Robson, who qualified for this week's event in Birmingham, won her first-round match when Stephanie Voegele retired down 6-4, 0-1 with a back injury.

The win came on the same day that Robson was given a wildcard into Wimbledon.

"I wasn't really surprised I got through, I've been playing well in practice and I was pleased my service worked well," said Robson. "Everybody has been so nice to me and that really means a lot."

Robson will face Yanina Wickmayer in the second round.

There had been some question of how the teenager would perform after last week's controversy, where she was quoted saying in a Vogue interview that some players were "sluts." She has since issued a statement of apology.
