PERTH, Australia(AP) Laura Robson has won her first singles match at the Hopman Cup, beating previously undefeated Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez 6-1, 7-6 (6) to give Britain a 1-0 lead over Spain in the tournament final on Saturday.
Andy Murray will attempt to clinch the match for Britain when he plays Tommy Robredo in singles later Saturday. If Robredo wins, a mixed doubles would decide the championship.
Robson had lost all three of her singles matches in the round-robin, while Martinez Sanchez had won all three. The 15-year-old British player led 6-2 in the second-set tiebreaker Saturday but Martinez Sanchez saved four match points before Robson prevailed on her fifth.
