Andy Roddick scrapes through his first-round match 6-2, 4-6, 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-3 against Jarkko Nieminen to reach the second round of the French Open.
Having played no match on clay this season after having to pull out of Madrid with a stomach virus, Roddick has spent almost the last two weeks in Paris and played two matches at an exhibition in the city the week before the tournament.
"It's kind of like when you miss an assignment in school and they give you a chance to get extra credit. I've been trying real hard to get extra credit," said Roddick.
