The tournament's surprise stars also got rankings rewards. Denis Istomin, in the tournament as a wild card, defeated No. 2 Novak Djokovic and reached the fourth round to move from No. 117 to No. 80. Mischa Zverev, who stunned No. 1 Andy Murray, reached a career-high No. 35 in the rankings. Andreas Seppi, who came back from two sets down against Nick Kyrgios, went from No. 89 to No. 68 in the rankings.
Gael Monfils, who fell to Nadal in the fourth round, switched positions with the Spaniard, moving from No. 6 to No. 9. Tomas Berdych, who lost to Federer in the third round, fell to No. 12 in the rankings.
Semifinalists Mirjana Lucic-Baroni and Coco Vandeweghe made big moves, as well. Lucic-Baroni went from No. 79 to No. 29 by getting to her first Grand Slam semifinal in 18 years, while Vandweghe moved from No. 35 to No. 20 after reaching her first Grand Slam semifinal. Jennifer Brady, who had to qualify to get into the main draw, moved from No. 116 to No. 78 with her quarterfinal showing.
Agnieszka Radwanska, a defending semifinalist who exited in the second round, dropped from No. 3 to No. 6.
Both Federer and Nadal saw their rankings drop in the second half of 2016, as injuries sidelined them from the tour.
