Roger Federer withdraws from Toronto; Andy Murray takes wild card

Roger Federer has withdrawn from the Rogers Cup in Toronto, while Andy Murray has taken a wild card into the event.

Federer, who fell to Kevin Anderson in five sets during the quarterfinals of Wimbledon, said in a statement "unfortunately with scheduling being the key to my longevity moving forward, I have regrettably decided to withdraw from Toronto this year."

Federer, who reached the final of Montreal in 2017, will drop 600 points but will stay at No. 2 entering Cincinnati unless Juan Martin del Potro reaches at least the final of his next scheduled event at Los Cabos and wins Toronto.

The tournament is otherwise scheduled to have 19 of the Top 20 players.

Former world No. 1 Murray, who returned from hip surgery a few weeks ago at Queen's but did not play Wimbledon, will be playing in the event. The 30-year-old is also scheduled to play Washington next week.

Murray has dropped below the Top 800 in the rankings.
