BANGKOK (AP)—Fifth-seeded Ivan Dodig of Croatia and No. 6 Fabio Fognini of Italy both lost Monday in the first round of the Thailand Open.
Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria upset Dodig 6-2, 7-5, while Thailand’s Danai Udomchoke overcame Fognini 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 on an opening day of surprises in Bangkok.
Dodig was broken twice in each set, landing just 59 percent of his first serves. Fognini also struggled with his serve, double-faulting seven times. Udomchoke converted five of his eight break points against the Italian, including three in the deciding set.
Seventh-seeded Robin Haase of the Netherlands did advance, beating Kittipong Wachiramanowong of Thailand 6-3, 7-6 (1).
