Sisters Serena Williams and Venus Williams will face each other for the first time since 2009 when they play the semifinals of the Family Circle Cup in Charleston. Serena leads her head-to-head with her older sister 13-10, with their last meeting coming at the 2009 WTA Championships, which was won by Serena, 6-2, 7-6 (4).
Their last meeting on clay was in the final of the 2002 French Open, which was won by Serena. Venus won their first meeting on clay in the 1998 Rome quarterfinals. The Family Circle Cup is played on green clay (Har-Tru), while the aforementioned European events are played on red clay. They have never met on green clay.
Both sisters were forced to win two matches on Friday, as rain suspended much of Thursday’s play.
