Serena Williams tells USA Today that her foot injuries were caused by fallen glass at a restaurant in Munich, requiring 18 stitches and then surgery to repair a torn tendon on the toe of her right foot.

"We were walking out of the restaurant and, all of a sudden, I felt pain," she told the newspaper. "The pain felt like kind of a stubbed foot, like 'Ow'... I started walking again. And it hurt some more. So we looked down and there was glass all over the floor... Then my practice partner put a cellphone down to the floor so we could see, and there was a huge puddle of blood."

Williams said she required six stitches on the bottom of her left foot and six each on the top and bottom of her right foot. After she returned to the United States, Williams noticed that her toe was "drooping" and had an MRI, which revealed she had a torn tendon.

Until now, the world No. 1 had not given any details of her injury to the public, saying only that she had had surgery to repair a cut on her foot when withdrawing from her scheduled pre-U.S. Open events. Her agent had described the injury as a "deep laceration."
