Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams won the Best Male Tennis Player and Best Female Tennis Player awards, respectively, at the 2011 ESPYs. Nadal won the award despite having lost to Novak Djokovic in all five finals they’ve contested this year, and Serena won the award even though she has only contested two tournaments since winning 2010 Wimbledon.
