Patrick Mouratoglou, the coach of Serena Williams, calls into question the WTA ranking system after the American finished the year No. 3 despite winning seven titles and holding a 58-4 record. Williams did not compete at two WTA Premier Mandatory events, Indian Wells and Beijing, which ended up counting as zero-pointers in her ranking. Williams is still 1,195 points behind Victoria Azarenka for the top spot, but could seize the No. 1 ranking from her in Australia.
“It's surprising to win two Grand Slams (Wimbledon and the U.S. Open), the Olympics, Madrid, and the WTA Championships and to be No. 3,” Mouratoglou told a small group of reporters. “If there is a bug somewhere, someone has to find it.”
Williams said that her 2012 season comes a close second to her 2002 season, when she won three Grand Slam titles. The 31-year-old added that it’s possible to win four straight majors like she did in 2002-2003, which she nicknamed the “Serena Slam.”
“I could,” she said. “I have a chance. Hopefully.”
