Serena Williams tells USA Today that she was not offended by Caroline Wozniacki’s imitation of her at an exhibition match in Brazil. Wozniacki poked fun at Williams by stuffing towels into her top and skirt, and mimicking how she walked during a match against Maria Sharapova.
Some people accused Wozniacki of racism on social media outlets, and Whoopi Goldberg discussed the Dane on her TV program, The View.
“I know Caro and I would call her my friend and I don’t think she (meant) anything racist by it,” Serena wrote the newspaper in an email. “(Roddick) and (Djokovic) do [the imitation] all the time and Caro does (it) and now it’s racist?? At the end of the day I spend my time focused on things to become better and not bring me down.”
Williams added that she hadn’t seen the video clip. The 31-year-old did say that Wozniacki, 21, might have to be more sensitive in the future. “I must add if people feel this way she should take reason and do something different next time.”
