The Mutua Madrid Open is guaranteed two star-studded fields, made even more intriguing by the announcement that Simona Halep and Caroline Wozniacki will both receive wild cards into the women’s singles draw.

"Muchas gracias @mutuamadridopen for this wild card opportunity," Halep wrote on Instagram on Wednesday. "Madrid has always been a special tournament for me, with happy memories and I’m grateful to be able to make more."

Kei Nishikori was also announced as a men’s singles wild card, having reached the final in 2014.

In March, Halep returned to action for the first time since the Court of Arbitration for Sport shortened her suspension for committing an anti-doping rule violation from four years at the Miami Open, where she lost to former world No. 2 Paula Badosa in three sets.

Wozniacki, who also took a wild card into the WTA 1000 event, began her comeback last summer after giving birth to two children. The former No. 1 was critical of the tournament’s decision to award a wild card to Halep given the nature of her absence from tennis.

“This is not directly at Simona, but if someone purposely cheats, if someone has tested positive for doping... I understand why a tournament wants a big star in the tournament, but it's my personal belief, and it's not a knock on anyone, but it's my personal belief that I don't think people should be awarded wild cards afterwards,” Wozniacki said last month.

Halep was initially charged with two anti-doping rule violations (ADRVs) by the International Tennis Integrity Agency, and was sentenced to a four-year suspension in 2023 after serving a provisional suspension starting after the 2022 US Open.

, Halep was found to bear “no significant fault” for one of the two ADRVs, and the second concerning irregularities on her Athlete Biological Passport (ABP) was thrown out, thus shortening her suspension and freeing her to resume her professional career.

Told of Wozniacki’s comments, Halep, who had been previously been similarly critical of players receiving wild cards after serving anti-doping suspensions, rejected implications that she had intentionally doped, and thanked the Miami Open for the wild card.

“Only one person being negative about me is not that important because I have hundreds of people that giving me love, so I will take that,” Halep said.

Halep is a two-time champion in Madrid, winning the title in back-to-back years in 2015 and 2016. Wozniacki finished runner-up at the WTA 1000 tournament back in 2009, the first year the tournament took place in the Caja Magica, losing the final to Dinara Safina.

The 2024 Mutua Madrid Open will take place from April 23-May 5.
