Simona Halep is set to resume her tennis career in earnest this month, having accepted a wild card into the main draw of the 2024 Miami Open, which will begin on March 17.

Halep was formally cleared by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) of intentional doping, a ruling which previously carried with it a four year suspension dating back to October 2022, on Tuesday.

“I’m thrilled to let you all know that I will be making my return to the WTA Tour in two weeks at the @miamiopen!” Halep wrote on social media Thursday. “Thank you to the tournament for giving me this opportunity and I cannot wait to be back on court and competing. See you all soon! ❤️🎾”

The former world No. 1 has been sidelined from competitive action since August 2022, when she tested positive for the banned substance roxadustat following her US Open defeat to Daria Snigur. She was handed a provisional suspension two months later.

Halep was then charged with an additional Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ADRV) by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), who ultimately ruled that she should serve a four-year suspension.

After appealing her case to CAS, the charge surrounding her Athlete Biological Passport (ABP) was thrown out and she was deemed to bear “no significant fault” for the presence of roxadustat, determining that it was ingested via a contaminated supplement.

Halep, who has strenuously maintained her innocence throughout this 17-month odyssey, was triumphant on social media when the CAS decision was announced on Tuesday.

“Looking forward, I am eager to turn this page and rejoin the tour with renewed vigor and an invigorated spirit,” she wrote.

Halep will be playing her first tournament since the 2022 US Open, and will be making her 10th main draw appearance in Miami. She has reached the semifinals twice, most recently in 2019, the year the tournament moved to its current home at the Hard Rock Stadium.

As a former world No. 1, Halep, who is currently without a WTA ranking, is allowed to accept an unlimited number of wild cards to aid in her return.
