Andy Murray says the appointment of friend and former coach Leon Smith as Great Britain’s new Davis Cup captain doesn’t guarantee that he’ll play. Smith is hoping that the British No. 1 will return for the Euro African Zone Group II relegation match against Turkey in Eastbourne, right after Wimbledon.

“I think I’ll have to make a decision a bit closer to the time,” said Murray. “Leon’s my friend, but I still need to do what’s right for me. If I want to play I’m playing for the team, it’s not that I’m playing because Leon’s the captain. I hope that was not the reason why he became captain. I don’t think that’s the way to make a decision on something as big as this.”

Murray’s older brother, Jamie, a doubles player, said of Smith’s appointment on Twitter: “Do you honestly think this will make him play? So transparent.”—M.C.
