Spain bested Belgium 3-0 behind a 7-6 (0), 6-4, 6-3 victory by Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco over Olivier Rochus and Steve Darcis; Sweden shut out Russia when Simon Aspelin and Robert Lindstedt bested Igor Kunitsyn and Dmitry Tursunov 6-4, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (6), 6-2; and Argentina beat Romania 3-0 when Juan Ignacio Chela and Eduardo Schwank beat Victor Hanescu and Horia Tecau 6-2, 7-6 (8), 6-1.
Spain will face the winner of the match between the United States and Chile, which is 2-1 in favor of the U.S. after the Bryan brothers won in straight sets.
Sweden is guaranteed a home tie for the quarterfinals, against either India or Serbia. Ilija Bozoljac and Nenad Zimonjic came through in a heated 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (10) victory to put Serbia 2-1 up against India.
Argentina will get another home tie against the winner of the Czech Republic and Kazakhstan. In Ostrava, the Czechs are ahead 2-1 after Tomas Berdych and Lukas Dlouhy came through. Argentina's David Nalbandian, who beat Romania's Adrian Ungur on Friday despite suffering from a hernia, said, "Everyone knows how important it is to me to represent Argentina in Davis Cup. It gives me a strength that I don't get at any other tournament."
In Vienna, Austria climbed back to 1-2 against France when Oliver Marach and Jurgen Melzer beat Julien Benneteau and Michael Llodra 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. In Zagreb, Germany took a 2-1 lead over Croatia when Christopher Kas and Philipp Petzschner defeated Ivo Karlovic and Ivan Dodig 6-3, 3-6, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.—Matthew Cronin
