Coco Gauff was in trouble in both sets—she served to stay in the first set at 4-5, then was down 5-3 in the second set, even facing set point—but she battled her way out of both situations and ended up defeating Chinese No. 1 Zhang Shuai, 7-5, 7-5, to move through to the quarterfinals of the US Open for the first time.

And with that win, the 18-year-old Gauff becomes the youngest American woman to reach the quarterfinals of the US Open since 2009, when a 17-year-old Melanie Oudin made a stunning run to the last eight in Flushing Meadows, taking out four Russians in a row—Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Elena Dementieva, Maria Sharapova and Nadia Petrova—before eventually falling to Caroline Wozniacki.

Standing between Gauff and the semifinals will be France’s Caroline Garcia, who defeated another American, Alison Riske-Amritraj, 6-4, 6-1.

Gauff is 2-0 in her career against Garcia, winning at Indian Wells last October, 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-1, and at Doha earlier this year, 6-2, 7-6 (3).

It’s the third Grand Slam quarterfinal of Gauff’s career:

  • 2021 Roland Garros: reached quarterfinals (l. to Krejcikova)
  • 2022 Roland Garros: reached final (l. to Swiatek)
  • 2022 US Open: reached quarterfinals so far (plays Garcia)
