Hubert Hurkacz has made history over the last 13 months, becoming the first Polish player ever to win a Masters 1000 title at Miami last year, then becoming the highest-ranked Polish player in ATP rankings history later in the year when he reached No. 9.
And on Wednesday afternoon in Monte Carlo, Hurkacz reached a personal milestone, recording the 100th tour-level win of his career.
The 25-year-old got one break in both the first and third sets to grind past Spain’s Pedro Martinez, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, after two hours and 12 minutes on court.
He came into Monte Carlo with a 98-84 career record, but with his 7-5, 6-4 first-round win over Bolivian qualifier Hugo Dellien and his win over Martinez, he’s at 100 wins now.
Hurkacz is through to the round of 16 at a Masters 1000 event on clay for the third time in his career, having gone this far twice before at Madrid in 2019 (falling to Alexander Zverev) and Rome in 2020 (falling to Diego Schwartzman). He’s been to the quarterfinals or better at Masters 1000 events six times, all on hard courts (twice at Indian Wells, twice in Miami and once each in Canada and Paris).
He’ll face another Spaniard, Albert Ramos-Vinolas, for a spot in the final eight here.
