There have been some unlucky twists and turns in his last few tournaments—he had to withdraw before his fourth-round match at Indian Wells due to illness, and retired in the quarterfinals of Miami with foot blisters—but when he’s healthy and playing, Jannik Sinner has been extremely tough to beat in recent months.

And with his 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 victory over former No. 12 Borna Coric in Monte Carlo on Monday, the current No. 12 has now won 20 of his last 23 matches.

The stretch begins at the Davis Cup Finals at the end of last year, where he went 3-0 to bring Italy to the quarterfinals of the team event, and he’s now 17-3 this year, his only pre-quarterfinal loss being his fourth-round withdrawal in Indian Wells.

Awaiting Sinner in the second round of Monte Carlo will be either Emil Ruusuvuori or Oscar Otte, who play their first-round match on Tuesday.
