Rafael Nadal improved his perfect start to the season to 18-0 at Indian Wells on Wednesday, defeating Reilly Opelka in the round of 16, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5).

His hard-fought win over the big-serving American puts him through to the 98th Masters 1000 quarterfinal of his career—he was already far and away the record-holder, but he’s now two away from becoming the first man to reach 100 Masters 1000 quarterfinals since this level of tournament began in 1990.

MOST CAREER MASTERS 1000 QUARTERFINALS:
98: Rafael Nadal
87: Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic
51: Andy Murray
45: Pete Sampras, David Ferrer, Tomas Berdych
44: Andre Agassi

More impressive: this is the 124th Masters 1000 event that Nadal has played, meaning he’s reached the quarterfinals or better at 98 of 124 (79%).

Even more impressive: he lost before the quarterfinals at the first eight he played, meaning he’s reached the quarterfinals or better at 98 of his last 116.
