Samantha Stosur says she underwent ankle surgery five weeks ago to repair a bone spur that had been bothering her the last few months of 2012.
“There’s not good time to do it, but obviously it had to be done,” she told the Australian media. “Everything has gone well but I probably haven’t been able to do enough of what I wanted to so we’ll see how it goes. I haven’t done any running yet - it was three weeks until I could hit. I’ve been back on court a week to 10 days now doing pretty much my normal training.”
The world No. 9 added that she was taking painkillers daily for the last two months of the season.
Stosur, who only won one of her four matches during the 2012 Australian summer, doesn’t think the operation will affect her at the 2013 Australian Open.
“I don’t think so,” she said from the Brisbane tournament. “Lots of players go through their injury periods and all that. I’m trying to play and do as best I can. These first couple of weeks are going to be a great test before Melbourne.”
