Samantha Stosur’s coach, David Taylor, tells the Age that he despises grunting. Stosur herself said it doesn’t bother her that much when she on court, but doesn’t like it when she's watching match on TV.

"I don't like it," Taylor said. "I hate it. You can't believe how many members of the general public come up to me and say 'It is great that Sam won [the U.S. Open] because she does not scream.' This is people that don't know tennis, I think it is deeply unpleasant for a lot of people watching tennis I can see how it would be very unappealing to come and watch a match. It is silly screaming, it is after contact and it is in times when the matches are close."

Victoria Azarenka, one of the tour’s loudest grunters, said that she cannot stop, will not change, and that if an opponent complained about it she would tell her to mind their own business.

"You cannot stop people from doing what they do on the court," she said. "It's not—you're not trying to distract anybody. It's just normal. For me, I do it during the practice, during the matches. If some people do it only during the matches to distract, maybe it's bothering. But I do it all the time. It’s just a part of me, a part of who I am."
