Tennis can be such a dichotomy. Their play may be ugly at times—Maria Sharapova managed to wrestle defeat from the jaws of victory in three sets against Flavia Pennetta today—but the consummate professionals on the WTA are, suffice it to say, specimens. And that's not meant to sound salacious, just truth-y.

Consider this, and then we'll talk:

The WTA's latest ad campaign under the "Strong is Beautiful" slogan seems to have a never-ending roll-out. Even so, the footage, the attire, the shots—and let's say it: the toned muscles—truly make for living works of art. (Even if it was dubiously considered "arty" to have a bright, vertical beam of light slicing through Sharapova at one point.)

The highlights there:

(1) All the production assistants amusingly squirming and turning out of the way of friendly fire as players blast balls by them,
(2) The candid surprise from one star at the 1:38 mark as ball dusted red comes careening back at her designer dress,
(3) Gisela Dulko's just-leave-it-at-fashionable studded choker necklace at 2:07.

Not to leave out the fellows here: If strong is so beautiful, well, youth is splendid. Just ask Ryan Harrison. Or America's top domestic diplomat, Jim Courier, the U.S. Davis Cup team's resident Hillary Clinton. Courier took to defending Harrison's antics from round one in a measured, thoughtful, well-said piece. Mary Carillo, again instantly making herself famous again, called Harrison "Mr. Crankypants." Here's hoping she and Jim can debate this in the court of public opinion sometime, in living color (commentary).

Stay tuned, tennis fanatics. It only gets stronger and prettier from here. Except when it doesn't. Woof!
