Taylor Fritz beats Alexander Zverev at US Open to reach first Grand Slam semifinal of career

Taylor Fritz has beaten Alexander Zverev in the US Open quarterfinals, 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3), to reach his first Grand Slam semifinal.

The 26-year-old American's previous-best results at Grand Slams were four quarterfinal finishes at Wimbledon in 2022, the US Open in 2023 and the Australian Open and Wimbledon this year.

He’s just the fourth active American man to reach a major semifinal.

Tiafoe will play Grigor Dimitrov in the night-time quarterfinal tonight, and if he wins, he’ll become the only active American man to reach more than one Grand Slam semifinal in his career.

Fritz had just beaten Zverev at the last major, a five-set victory in the fourth round of Wimbledon, and his quarterfinal victory over the No. 4-ranked German in Flushing Meadows was the milestone 25th Top 10 win of his career.

“I came out really just feeling good, ready to play,” the No. 12-ranked Californian told reporters afterwards. “I think in a lot of my previous quarterfinals I came out a little bit nervous, but today I just felt really good from the start, ready to go.

“I think maybe got more nervous as the match went on, because I felt like he was playing points a little bit tight. It almost caused me to play a little bit tight too. But, I mean, I came up with a lot of serves when I needed them. You know, played some big points well.

“Super pumped to make it into my first semi.”

Fritz will play either Tiafoe or Dimitrov in the semifinals, and if it’s Tiafoe, it’ll be the first all-American men’s semifinal at a Grand Slam event since the 2005 US Open, when Andre Agassi defeated Robby Ginepri to reach the championship match.
