On Tuesday, Taylor Fritz won an all-American battle over Frances Tiafoe, 7-6 (6), 3-6, 6-4, to reach the second round of the ATP Masters 1000 event in Paris.

Fritz, who captured his maiden career ATP title in Eastbourne in June, is making his first main draw appearance at the Rolex Paris Masters. Up next for the 22-year-old is seventh-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas, who received a first-round bye. The 21-year-old Greek won their lone previous meeting at the Laver Cup in September.

With the loss, Tiafoe—who made a major breakthrough in January when he reached the Australian Open quarterfinals—is now 21-25 on the season. Next week, he will compete at the Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan, a field featuring eight of the tour’s  21-and-under stars.
