TC Plus Match of the Day: Rafael Nadal vs. Gael Monfils, Madrid

Rafael Nadal has been dominant on clay this season, but he now faces the difficult task of trying to win the Madrid and Rome double.

That quest begins on Wednesday, when Nadal takes on Gael Monfils in our Tennis Channel Plus Match of the Day.

After winning titles in both Monte Carlo and Barcelona, it's clear that the Spaniard is in tremendous form. The top-seeded player didn't lose a single set in either tournament, and he appears to be fully healthy for the first time in 2018.

As for Monfils, the Frenchman defeated qualifier Nikoloz Basilashvili in his opening-round match in Madrid, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. The 31-year-old said that his fitness isn't where he wants it to be after the match, which isn't going to inspire much confidence going against a player of Rafa's caliber.

Monfils is, however, one of the more intriguing talents on the ATP tour. When he is playing at the top of his game, he is capable of giving any opponent fits. He'll have to find that gear against Nadal on Wednesday.

The Spaniard has dominated this head-to-head matchup over the years, going 13-2 against Monfils in his career. And with Monfils coming back from an injury, it would take a special performance from the Frenchman to prevent Rafa from earning win No. 14—or even to end the King of Clay's 46-set winning streak on his favorite surface.
