Jannik Sinner and Nick Kyrgios have never played one another in singles.

World No. 10 Jannik Sinner should easily be able to handle a player outside the Top 100, right? Not so fast! For his opponent in the quarterfinals of the BNP Paribas Open is 132nd-ranked Nick Kyrgios, who just so happens to be looking rather motivated in the desert.

Kyrgios had gone two years without earning a win over a Top-10 opponent heading into Monday, but was able to knock off world No. 8 Casper Ruud in routine fasion, 6-4, 6-4. He has now won each of his three singles matches in straight sets at Indian Wells, and his recent doubles success with countryman Thanasi Kokkinakis appears to have reinvigorated the polarizing Aussie. Now, he’s as dangerous a player there is on the ATP Tour.

There’s no denying how good Sinner can be when he’s on his game, as the 20-year-old has a great combination of size, power and mobility. He is, however, facing a player that should be able to match his power, and that will take away from the edge Sinner normally has against his opponents.

The young Italian possesses the ability to win service games with ease, but he also can lack focus and let them slip away a little more often than you’d like to see. That has been something that has plagued him in some of his biggest matches over the last year or so, and it’s something that could be dooming against this version of Kyrgios. The Australian didn’t face a single break point in his win over Ruud, and he made 65% of his first serves in this match—and won 82% of his first-serve points. When dialed in, not many people are as dominant as Kyrgios with the ball on their racquet.

All in all, it might be a little odd to see one of the best players in the world as such a small favorite over somebody that falls outside the Top 100, but Kyrgios isn’t your ordinary unseeded player. Everybody on the planet knows that he has the ability to play this game at an elite level; it’s just a matter of whether or not he wants to go out there and give it his all. Looking healthier than ever, both physically and mentally, it appears we’re seeing the best of Kyrgios. Take advantage of it while you can.
