Venus Williams might not have won a title this season, but she had something no other top player did—consistency in the big events. Williams reached the final of the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and WTA Finals, the semifinals at Flushing Meadows, and the fourth round of the French Open.
At eight events, more than half her total, she fell to the eventual champion. While there were plenty of distractions off the court—most recently, her sister Serena's wedding and a $400,000 burglary of her Florida home—she didn't allow it to affect her performances.
That's good by most standards. At 37, and playing with Sjogren's syndrome, it's remarkable. The season had few campaigns as compelling.
