Top 5 Photos, July 2: Kate Middleton, royal fan, heads to Court 14

Tuesday was another action-packed day at the All England Club, with top players pulled together scrappy victories on Centre Court, and a member of the royal family making her way around the grounds. These are the Top 5 photos from day two:

1. Reigning Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber took to Centre Court on Tuesday against Maria Tatjana. Both players struggled to hold serve; there were five breaks in the first and second sets, but Kerber won both: 6-4, 6-3.

2. Kate Middleton attended Wimbledon on Tuesday. Before taking her usual seat in the front row of the royal box, Middleton made a surprise appearance on Court 14 to watch watch British player Harriet Dart. The royal mom and Prince William are both tennis enthusiasts, often playing at their country home in Norfolk, Anmer Hall.

3. Serena Williams, 23-time Grand Slam champion, was tested in her opening match against Giulia Gatto-Monticone. The Italian forced Williams to up her level and didn't hand over any free points. Williams fought through a 6-2, 7-5 battle to secure a spot in the second round. After finishing a rat-a-tat exchange at the net, she celebrated as if she won the tournament.

4. Roger Federer showed some signs of mileage on the clock in his opening match against Lloyd Harris. The 37-year-old lost the first set, 6-3, but in the end reminded everyone there's no one quite like him on grass. The eight-time Wimbledon champion railled past Harris, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2, to advance to the second round.

5. Ashleigh Barty won her 13th straight match on Tuesday against Saisai Zheng, 6-4, 6-2. Even though things got a little close in the first set, she continued to play her unique game and used her slice to dictate points and set up net play. The world No. 1 will take on Alison Van Uytvanck in the second round.
