The women's draw in Madrid has yielded a loaded top half, with Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Elena Dementieva in one quarter and Justine Henin, Dinara Safina, Jelena Jankovic and Ana Ivanovic in the other.

Ivanovic and Jankovic will meet in the second round, both players receiving byes for reaching the semifinals of Rome. Another possible blockbuster second round match could take place between Dinara Safina and Justine Henin -- the pair last met when Safina defeated Henin in Berlin in 2008, with Henin announcing her retirement days later.

The bottom half of the draw features fewer in-form players and is headed by Caroline Wozniacki, Venus Williams and Svetlana Kuznetsova, and also includes Victoria Azarenka and Agnieszka Radwanska.

Samantha Stosur, who is enjoying a strong run on clay, is also in this section and could meet Rome finalist Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez in the second round. Venus Williams could meet Vera Zvonareva or Melanie Oudin in the second round.
