OEIRAS, Portugal (AP)—Top-seeded Agnes Szavay of Hungary lost in the first round of the Estoril Open on Monday, beaten by Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

On the men’s side, seventh-seeded Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina was upset by Alejandro Falla of Colombia 6-4, 7-6 (4). Chela took a 4-2 lead in the first set before Falla broke back twice against the 2004 champion. Falla then wasted a 4-2 lead in the second, with Chela forcing the tiebreaker.

Top-ranked Roger Federer has a bye into the second round of the clay-court tournament, a tuneup for this month’s French Open.

Marcel Granollers beat fellow Spaniard Oscar Hernandez 6-2, 6-1, and Arnaud Clement of France overcame Igor Kunitsyn of Russia, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. Portugal’s Leonardo Tavares won 6-3, 6-3 against Brazil’s Ricardo Mello.

In another upset among the women, Julia Goerges of Germany routed third-seeded Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada 6-1, 6-1. Seventh-seeded Peng Shuai of China beat Julie Coin of France 6-2, 6-2, and Kimiko Date Krumm of Japan outlasted Petra Martic of Croatia 6-7 (4), 7-5, 7-6 (2).
