NEW YORK(AP) Top-seeded Dinara Safina has overcome 15 double-faults to pull off another comeback victory over a low-ranked opponent at the U.S. Open.
Beset by shaky nerves and poor play, Safina managed to hold on to beat 67th-ranked Kristina Barrois of Germany 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-3 Thursday in the second round.
This comes after Safina barely avoided becoming the first No. 1-seeded woman to lose in the U.S. Open's first round. She had 11 double-faults and 48 unforced errors in that match, a three-set win over 167th-ranked Olivia Rogowska.
Safina needed more than two hours to get through each match so far.
