A tornado that affected the New York City area on Thursday damaged property at the West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills, reports WorldTennisMagazine.com.
Strong wins damaged awnings and windows as well as the clay and grass courts at the club, which is the former home of the U.S> Open. It forced cancellation of the remainder of the USTA national men's grasscourt championships.
"Ironically, the morning after the tornado touching down at Forest Hills comes 50 years to the day when the 1960 U.S. Championships resumed after a week’s delay due to Hurricane Donna," the story said.
The Club is facing a sale to a local developer that plans to turn the building into condos.
