The ATP and WTA tours are planning on selling live scores for the first time, Bloomberg reports. "There are a lot of unauthorized people out there collecting our data, either scraping it off our websites or television or sitting in the stands, keying in every shot, often with errors, and selling it for substantial profit," the ATP’s Kate Gordon said.
Officials says they are concerned about people attending matches who send unlicensed scoring data to gambling websites or data companies for a profit, as they are able to send information faster than the current scoring system which gives gamblers an advantage when placing bets.
The tours have contracted with a European company to sell their own system, which they also hope will create a new revenue stream.
"The data will be sold to both the gambling market and the editorial market," WTA spokesman Andrew Walker said.
