It's time, once again, for fashion notes from the first week in Flushing Meadows. Today, we highlight our favorite looks in New York City; tomorrow we'll take a look at some fashion errors.
HITS
Juan Martin del Potro looks lanky-fun in his gray and pink colors. Too bad that, after his five-set ouster at the hands of Lleyton Hewitt, we won't see any more of it from the 2009 U.S. Open champ.
Serena and Venus Williams, in their opening doubles match attire, showed contrasting style views. Venus's pops of floral color reveal a relatively bubbly disposition, while Serena's 1980s-esque garb, with a near-off-shoulder top, display her throwback sensibilities. Venus likewise brightened up the court in her first two singles matches, with the full floral dress, a print very "in" this year. Coupled with pink-purple locks of hair, the look did much to keep her fans "up" despite her final-set tiebreak loss to Zheng Jie.
Ryan Harrison's shirt bears mention despite the fact that he was dusted in round 1 by Rafael Nadal. Its fading blue looks sharp against his tan.
Rafael Nadal himself, here in his day-session outfit, appears radiant. Or radiant as a raging bull can appear. The "atomic red" tone recalls Maria Sharapova's same-colored dress at yesteryear's Open.
Richard Gasquet wins out in this this black-blue-white (Estonia's flag colors) diagonal design, a polo John Isner also wears and likewise rocks.
Samantha Stosur's green frock looks great set against her toned, tanned skin. Pity that it didn't stick around longer in the tournament after her upset at the hands of 17-year-old Victoria Duval. Another great cut on a Stosur dress to boot.
Jelena Jankovic, like Harrison, relishes in the shades of blue adorning her frame. It's sort of a modern-meets-vintage look, top to bottom. It's a good look on the hit-or-miss Serbian, who's back near the top of the heap this year.
Novak Djokovic makes red look regal—and that's tough to do. This ruddy-black ensemble appears smashing on his sleek physique.
Laura Robson and Maria Kirilenko fare well in orange-and-khaki outfits that complement their figures and are simultaneously stately and winking.
Daniel Evans' blue-and-yellow shirt pairs well with his winsome smile. He upset Kei Nishikori in it and then took out Bernard Tomic.
