Chair umpire Allison Lang gets the score wrong in the fourth game of the second set of Ana Ivanovic's 6-3, 6-4 victory over American Vania King. The tape of the contest and the scorecard show that the Serbian lost the first three points of the game and won the next three, but Lang lost her way when it was 0-40 and she called the score 15-30.
Lang gave the game to Ivanovic, who looked confused. Ivanovic, who has been battling a virus, said that she was too sick to realize what was going on.
King added: "I looked at the screen and they had changed the score already, I thought so. But nobody said anything. I'm in the match and sometimes I forget the score so I was like thinking, I thought I was up 40-0, and we're on the deuce side and then it just didn't feel right. I looked up at the score to see what the score was and they had changed it to the game. So I got really confused."
King said that she did not approach Lang about it.
"No. Sometimes I forget the score. And nobody said anything. I looked up at the score and I thought the scoreboard would say and it changed to game. To be honest at that time I was confused but I had to move on because we went into the next game. I couldn't dwell on it too long, but if someone would have yelled at me I would have addressed it. It's a pity, I don't know what would have happened."—Matt Cronin
