NEW YORK (AP)—Laura Vallverdu of the University of Miami has won the Honda Sports Award as the top college women’s tennis player.

The senior from Venezuela is the Hurricanes’ all-time leader with 131 singles wins. She reached the semifinals of the NCAA singles championship this spring and finished with a 35-13 record.

She is the first Miami player to win at least 30 matches in each of her four seasons.

The other finalists were Georgia Tech’s Irina Falconi, Georgia’s Chelsey Gullickson and Cal’s Jana Juricova.

Vallverdu becomes eligible to win the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year award. The winner will be announced June 21.
