Video: Eugenie Bouchard Refuses to Shake Fed Cup Foe's Hand

Budding Canadian star Eugenie Bouchard wanted nothing to do with shaking Slovakian Fed Cup foe Kristina Kucova's hand at the draw ceremony for her team's World Group playoff tie. See here how it transpired, via Stephanie Myles' YouTube clip:​

​In a word, Bouchard said, the customary greeting is "lame." She seemed to exchange quite the giggle about that remark with someone down the line, perhaps team captain Sylvain Bruneau, at the press conference, though teammate Aleksandra Wozniak, who (to her credit) shook her opening-match foe's hand, didn't seem to find the comment so humorous.

This would seem both silly and serious, Bouchard's response to the international team competition's norm. Silly in that she and the Slovaks all got a laugh out of it; serious in that she may very well mean what she says. Even so, opponents often pose for photographs, often with coin-flipping rich folks or child-sized charity contest winners, without problem. Though Bouchard's words and (in)action may seem petty, there's potential that we don't have the full story, all the context that would be needed to properly tweak her for the perceived slight.
