Video: Mona Barthel's stylish ways

In yesterday's third round at Indian Wells, Mona Barthel of Germany ousted Serbia's Ana Ivanovic. She did so in typical WTA fashion, by the bipolar score of 6-1, 3-6, 6-0. Fittingly, No. 24 Barthel's victory over the No. 11 was accompanied by an all-but-artistic volley deep in the match, termed the BNP Paribas Open Hot Shot of the Day:

It's striking how Barthel countered Ivanovic's trademark forehand drive with such precision and touch. Barthel is certainly rising, now 8-16 against Top 20 opponents in her career and boasting a vicious backhand. Spin friend and Instagram maven Erwin Ong (@rubercky) notes that she's also catalyzing talk about her on-court style, notably appearing "in a Chinese porcelain print by American designer Denise Cronwall." Barthel previously showed in a sort of doily dress in early 2013 not so well received by Australian Open fashionistas, self included.
