Samson's got nothing on this story.

Down 5-3 to Rafael Nadal in a round-robin match at the ATP World Tour Finals, Andy Murray did what any self-harassing pro would do—he snipped off some of his own hair. "I had some hair in my eye, and I just wanted to get rid of it," a matter-of-fact Murray told the media afterward.

What makes this story all the more rich is that Murray didn't simply have the scissors on hand, which would indicate he had some premeditation about trimming his hair. In truth, he asked the most logical person nearby for the sharp instrument: the ATP World Tour trainer.

"I haven't seen that," added Tennis Channel's Jim Courier, "but it harkens back to the time when Ivan Lendl used to pluck out his eyelashes all the time midmatch."

"He goes with the semi-Western grip on the scissors," Paul Annacone, Courier's fellow commentator, said of Murray's shearing. "Good separation with fingers, but you can see with the wrist-cock, he can get a little more spin as he whips the hair through the blades." (A+)

It did the Brit good for a wee bit of time. He proceeded to hold serve to pull within 5-4 before Nadal closed out the first set in the subsequent game. Rafa ramped up his efforts from there, securing a semifinal spot in London's O2 Arena by running away with the second set, 6-1.

Nadal addressed the press later as well. He laughed upon hearing that Murray, who served poorly on the day, was bothered by his own dome's follicles. It's unlikely that Murray will soon take to the Nadal-esque or Federerian bandanna look, but anything's possible among the game's best. They're always innovating.
