FLASHBACK: Ostapenko won a memorable match against Venus Williams earlier this season.

NEW YORK—Bethenny Frankel once said, “If you take a shot at this B, you better not miss,” and Jelena Ostapenko, clad in optic yellow, has fans buzzing in a similar fashion at the 2023 US Open as she surges into the second week for the first time in her already-iconic career.

The 2017 Roland Garros champion has long turned heads with her high-octane game, her one-of-a-kind DK ONE styles, and her expressive on-court demeanor. All of that was turned up to 11 or, more appropriately, 17, as she battled Bernarda Pera on the eponymous court on Friday, culminating with her dramatic removal of an unruly spectator.

“This fan,” she explains matter-of-factly after her three-set win over the American. “I was leading 4-1 in the third set, and then suddenly I served a serve and he started to shout like crazy. Yeah, not like one or two words, I think two sentences in a row. Of course, the chair umpire told him to be quiet.”

Her exasperated reaction after holding serve for 5-1 immediately went viral, one such clip earning over 1000 likes in under 24 hours, though Ostapenko clarifies the fan’s ejection was a joint effort.

“He just left after the chair umpire told him something, so it was like ‘Go, go.’”

And go, go did Ostapenko into the fourth round, avenging a 2019 defeat to Pera at her own home tournament in Jurmala, and booking an intriguing rematch against Iga Swiatek, to whom she has never lost in three previous meetings.

Win or lose, fans will fully expect another stylish performance from the Latvian, who spoke about her love of fashion at the Western & Southern Open last month.

“I like bright colors and to look differently from the others, so you don’t have to wear exactly the same outfit. If you’re wearing something special, something you like and can design, it’s not easy, but we’re trying to do what is possible and I think it’s not too bad!”

Swiatek will no doubt take her shot on Sunday, but against Ostapenko, she knows she can’t miss.
