Stan Wawrinka joked about his mid-match coffee order against Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinals of the Paris Masters 1000, saying he needed it to wake up. The match began at around 11 p.m. and finished well after 1 a.m., with Wawrinka winning in two tiebreak sets.
"I needed to wake up a little," he said. "The umpire told me I could order a club sandwich too. It's Friday night, I would have taken a gin and tonic."
Just as well he didn't—Wawrinka complained of a headache during the second set.
The world No. 4 returned the next evening to take on Novak Djokovic.
"Definitely, it's going to be difficult," he said before the encounter. "But it's part of tennis. We work the whole year for matches like these. For me, playing against Novak is a challenge. I love playing against the best."
The Swiss fell to Djokovic in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0.
