Wawrinka on Kyrgios: He didn't apologize

"Uh, he didn't apologize, so no. But I prefer not to talk about him. Thank you."

Stan Wawrinka is a Swiss mister not given to dust-ups. Thus his latest TV interview from courtside at the Western & Southern Open is painful on a couple levels, one being the brief delay between questions and answers and then his visible and audible uncomfortability in talking about Nick Kyrgios at this juncture.

"For the past few days, for sure, my head was not really into the tennis," Wawrinka admitted to Sky Sports. "I'm trying to be there."

His statement that Kyrgios has not apologized counters the 20-year-old Aussie's own claim made in a Facebook post after their Montreal incident last week, in which Kyrgios muttered at Wawrinka a comment about his fellow Aussie, Thanasi Kokkinakis, having slept with Donna Vekic, Wawrinka's presumed girlfriend. On Facebook, Kyrgios said that he had in fact made a private apology.

Meanwhile, Vekic herself has competed in a Challenger event in Vancouver this week. She lost her opening match to Alla Kudryavtseva in three sets on the same day that Wawrinka defeated Borna Coric in three in Cincinnati. A relatively muted Kyrgios fell to John Isner in Montreal after overcoming Wawrinka, who retired from the match with injury. Kyrgios then lost his opening match in Cincy to Richard Gasquet, 6-2, 6-1, in a rematch from this year's Wimbledon (after which Kyrgios was accused of tanking a game).

Kokkinakis himself had run-ins during and after his match with Ryan Harrison in Cincinnati, later saying he's had trouble sleeping in the wake of that kerfuffle and Kyrgios' comments.

It goes to show that words truly have power and can linger in the air. What's done is done, but Kyrgios' spiteful remark certainly caused a slide for those involved at all ends of the matter.
