GSTAAD, Switzerland (AP)—Second-seeded Stanislas Wawrinka advanced to the quarterfinals of his home Swiss Open tournament on Thursday, beating Peter Luczak of Australia 6-3, 7-5.

Wawrinka used his first serves, including nine aces, to control play against the 248th-ranked Luczak.

The Swiss No. 2 plays Marcel Granollers in the quarterfinals, after the eight-seeded Spaniard completed a rain-affected match that started Wednesday.

Granollers quickly won two games to beat Igor Andreev of Russia 6-1, 6-3.

Two more of Spain’s seeded players had straight sets wins in rain-interrupted matches.

Fourth-seeded Fernando Verdasco beat Frederico Gil of Portugal, 6-3, 6-2, and fifth-seeded Feliciano Lopez beat compatriot Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-3, 6-4.

Verdasco, ranked No. 20, seeks his first title of the season and broke Gil’s serve twice in each set without dropping his own.

Top seeded Nicolas Almagro, another Spaniard, will resume his second-round match Friday, after rain curtailed play when Jarkko Nieminen of Finland led 3-2 in the opening set.

In another rain-delayed match Thursday, unseeded Andreas Haider-Maurer of Austria revered a one-set overnight deficit to beat Colombian Santiago Giraldo 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Julien Benneteau of France beat Germany’s Matthias Bachinger 6-4, 6-4 to earn a quarterfinals match against Verdasco.
