The tennis world is preparing to shift its attention to Flushing Meadows, but there are still two tune-ups to keep an eye on before the Open begins next Monday. The draws at the ATP tournament in Winston-Salem and the WTA tournament in New Haven have already been heavily revised, and partially gutted, due to the players’ ever-shifting pre-Slam schedules. Here’s a look at what we might see ahead, and what it might mean once all roads have reached New York.

Draw is here*
A 250-level event sandwiched between a Masters 1000 (in Cincinnati) and a major (in Flushing Meadows) will always struggle to attract Top 10 talent, and Winston-Salem is no exception. The No. 1 seed this year is 15th-ranked Richard Gasquet. After that, though, this draw perks up. Roberto Bautista Agut, Pablo Cuevas, Steve Johnson, Kevin Anderson, Sam Querrey, Gilles Simon: All of them are in the world’s Top 32, and all are here. Among that group, Johnson, the new U.S. No. 1, is probably the most intriguing. How will he handle the increased scrutiny that comes with being the best the U.S. men have to offer? Those expectations have weighed on others.
