When will Swiatek play her Australian Open first round?

Iga Swiatek is set to kick off her 2024 Australian Open campaign on Tuesday, January 16 against Sofia Kenin.

Where did Swiatek land in the 2024 Australian Open draw?

The top-seeded Swiatek was dealt an especially tricky draw, opening not only against the 2020 champion in Kenin, but would also face the winner of 2016 champion Angelique Kerber or 2022 finalist Danielle Collins in her very next match.

Luckily for Swiatek, she hasn’t lost a match since last fall, carrying a 16-match winning streak into her sixth main-draw appearance in Melbourne.

Since losing to Veronika Kudermetova at the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, Swiatek has picked up titles in Beijing and Cancun, where she captured her first WTA Finals victory to edge out Aryna Sabalenka for year-end world No. 1 and WTA Player of the Year.

How has Swiatek performed in 2024 so far?

The four-time Grand Slam champion began her 2024 season at the United Cup, where she won all five of her singles matches for to earn MVP status for Team Poland but still finished runner-up to Team Germany.

Swiatek leads Kenin 1-0 in their head-to-head, their only previous meeting coming in the finals of 2020 Roland Garros, where the Pole won her first major title.

Though Kenin was named 2020 WTA Player of the Year after winning that year’s Australian Open and finishing runner-up in Paris, the American has struggled with injuries and inconsistencies in the years since, enjoying a return to form in 2023 when she stunned Coco Gauff in the first round of Wimbledon.

Swiatek will face Kenin first on Rod Laver Arena on Tuesday.
