She’s in Monterrey, Mexico, playing an International hard-court tournament. Angelique Kerber opted to play the Abierto GNP Seguros over the more prestigious clay-court Volvo Car Open in Charleston, and she picked up her first win at the tournament on Tuesday.
The German’s first-rounder against former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone was anything but routine. The 36-year-old Italian took the first set, 6-4, before Kerber leveled the match with a bagel in the second. The two-time Grand Slam champion won the decider, 6-4, to advance to the second round.
