Where in the world is the world No. 1?

She’s in Monterrey, Mexico, playing an International hard-court tournament. Angelique Kerber opted to play the Abierto GNP Seguros over the more prestigious clay-court Volvo Car Open in Charleston, and she picked up her first win at the tournament on Tuesday.

The German’s first-rounder against former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone was anything but routine. The 36-year-old Italian took the first set, 6-4, before Kerber leveled the match with a bagel in the second. The two-time Grand Slam champion won the decider, 6-4, to advance to the second round.

Coming off a tremendous 2016, Kerber has labored through the first three months of the year. Her win on Tuesday improved her mark to 13-7—not quite befitting of a world No. 1—and has yet to win a title in seven tournaments. She hasn’t even reached a final.

That could change in Monterrey, where the top seeds after Kerber are No. 16 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, No. 24 Caroline Garcia, No. 25 Carla Suarez Navarro and No. 30 Timea Babos.

Kerber will play Mandy Minella in the second round, and could face either Heather Watson or Ekaterina Makarova in the quarterfinals.
