The 2024 Brisbane International draw was announced on Saturday local time and former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka will face Germany’s Tamara Korpatsch in her first match in 16 months.

In the men’s draw, Rafael Nadal’s first opponent of his 2024 comeback was revealed to be a qualifier or lucky loser.

Osaka left the tour in September 2022 and announced she was expecting her first child three months later, giving birth to daughter Shai in the summer of 2023.

“I just want to show Shai that she’s capable of everything,” she said on Friday, “so that’s one of my main purposes and reasons for wanting to be out here.”

The two-time Australian Open champion accepted a wild card into the WTA 500 tournament, and will take on the unseeded Korpatsch in their first meeting.

Ranked No. 84 in the world, Korpatsch is perhaps best known for calling out then-doubles partner Harmony Tan for defaulting from their 2022 Wimbledon Championships match after Tan defeated 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams in singles, posting numerous messages about the incident on social media. She won her first WTA singles title in October at the Transylvania Open in Cluj-Napoca.

Should Osaka defeat Korpatsch, she is projected to face fellow former world No. 1 Karolina Pliskova, who is playing her first tournament since shutting down her season last fall due to a wrist injury.

The highest-ranked player in Osaka’s quarter is No. 3 seed Jelena Ostapenko, who is a potential third-round opponent for the four-time Grand Slam champion.

Nadal is playing his first tournament since the 2023 Australian Open and announcing that 2024 could be his final season on tour. The 22-time Grand Slam champion could face No. 8 seed and 2021 Australian Open semifinalist Aslan Karatsev in the second round, having landed in the same quarter of the draw as No. 4 seed Ugo Humbert.

Main-draw action at the Brisbane International will begin on Sunday, December 31.
