Venus Williams [10] vs. Jelena Ostapenko [13]
Venus is 37 and Ostapenko is 20, but they’re both doing the same thing: defying their ages. The more relevant numbers are their rankings: Venus is 11th and Ostapenko is 13th. In other words, their first meeting should be a good one. Each likes to let the ball fly, especially on the forehand side. Ostapenko is on a magical ride at the moment, but she’ll be making her Centre Court debut on Tuesday. Venus won’t.
Winner: Williams
Garbiñe Muguruza [14] vs. Svetlana Kuznetsova [7]
On Monday, Muguruza won a contrast in styles with the defensive-minded Angelique Kerber. On Tuesday, she’ll have to turn around and play a fellow slugger like herself. Kuznetsova has played as well as anyone so far at Wimbledon; she hasn’t dropped a set, or been seriously pushed. But based on their past, Muguruza should feel confident: She’s won her last three meetings with Kuznetsova. And she doesn’t want to squander a performance as good as the one she put in against Kerber, does she?
Winner: Muguruza
